How to Write a Healthcare Resume That Gets Noticed

Most healthcare resumes fail before a human ever reads them. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) scan, parse, and score every resume before routing it to a recruiter — and clinical resumes full of tables, headers with text boxes, and creative formatting are the hardest for those systems to parse.

1. Use a clean, single-column format

Avoid tables, text boxes, headers with graphics, and multiple columns. ATS parsers read left to right, top to bottom — anything that breaks that flow may come out garbled or be dropped entirely. Use a simple Word or Google Docs template with standard section headers: Summary, Experience, Education, Certifications, Skills.

Quick check: Copy and paste your resume into Notepad or TextEdit. If the result is a jumbled mess, an ATS will see the same thing. Fix the formatting.

2. Lead with a targeted professional summary

The summary at the top of your resume is the most-read section and the most often skipped by candidates. A strong one is two to four sentences that answer: who you are, how many years of experience you have, what clinical setting or specialty you're best suited to, and what you bring that others don't.

Weak: "Experienced nurse looking for a new opportunity in a fast-paced environment."
Strong: "ICU-trained RN with 6 years of experience in level-2 trauma centers, specializing in post-surgical care and hemodynamic monitoring. CCRN certified. Seeking a senior float pool position where cross-unit experience is an asset."

3. Match keywords to the job description

Healthcare job descriptions are precise. If a posting says "Epic EMR experience required," your resume needs to say "Epic" — not "EHR experience" or "electronic medical records." Copy the exact phrasing for technical skills, certifications, and equipment where accurate.

  • Certification names: BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CEN, CCRN — spell them out exactly as listed
  • Software: Epic, Cerner, Meditech, PointClickCare, Dragon Medical
  • Specialties: PACU, NICU, L&D, ED, PCU, ICU — all caps, exact acronym
  • Procedures: phlebotomy, IV insertion, wound care, nasogastric tube placement

4. Quantify your clinical impact

Numbers stand out. Wherever you can replace a vague statement with a specific measurement, do it. You don't need to be exact — reasonable approximations are fine.

  • Before: Responsible for patient care on a busy medical floor
  • After: Managed a 6–8 patient assignment on a 36-bed telemetry unit averaging 95% occupancy
  • Before: Assisted with quality improvement initiatives
  • After: Co-led a sepsis protocol audit that reduced door-to-antibiotic time by 22 minutes

5. List your certifications prominently

Certifications should appear both in a dedicated section and inline within your professional summary. Many ATS systems parse certifications separately, so having them listed clearly in their own section (with expiration dates where relevant) prevents them from being missed.

6. The section most nurses skip: licenses

Include your nursing license number, state, type (RN, LPN, APRN), and expiration date. This isn't just for compliance — many hospitals pre-screen with verification tools that cross-check license numbers against state boards. Making it easy signals professionalism and saves the recruiter a lookup step.

If you hold a compact nursing license (eNLC), say so explicitly. It's a significant differentiator for employers who staff travel nurses or multi-state telehealth roles.

Final tip: tailor your resume for each application. It doesn't need to be a full rewrite — update the summary and ensure the top five keywords from the job description appear naturally in your experience bullets. That alone puts you ahead of the majority of applicants.
